Lake Balaton has the largest body of freshwater in Europe. Lake Balaton - Hungary's inland sea - is shallow, averaging about 3m in depth, and on the southern shore you'll paddle for a kilometre before the water gets above your waist. Here the water is at its shallowest and safest for children, and the beaches are not reedy as they often are on the northern shore. The north has many more historical towns, mountain trails and better wine. The resorts at Badacsony, Tihany and Balatonfured have more grace and atmosphere and are far less commercial than say, Siofok to the south.
